Lumina Light Show Proposal

Hi John, March 2025

The approved Material Change of Use DA for the light shows is for the land rather than the venture. The DA approval is valid until Oct 2029.  We don't know who was providing the finance for the light shows. Council won't answer any questions regarding the light show DA. The proponent can sell the DA approval or council could find another proponent. It is looking like the Botanic Gardens light shows won't go ahead. However, there is no guarantee that there won't  be some sort of commercial venture there in the future. The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctury is having short term Lumina Light Shows commencing in March. We plan on monitoring these show to try & assess negative impacts. The sanctury got a $1m govt grant to have a new tourist attraction. The Moment Factory show design & installation costs $5m.

Regards Bron

There is a proposal by a private company, Lumina, for a guided light & sound walking tour in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha. Brisbane City Council has approved the company to lodge a Development Application for Material Change of Use for the gardens and Anzac Park Toowong. You may have seen reports on TV and social media about this.

This proposal has the potential to have a large impact on the Botanic Gardens and surrounds. .

Quarry Redevelopment Mt Coot-tha

The Mt  Coot-tha quarry is to cease operations in 2029.  The quarry has served Brisbae since early 1960's. It isnow up to the community to decide what should happen to the quarry.   As a garden enthusiat the quarry should be added to theBotanic GArdens and aafacilities added to enhance public participation.

Extract from Quarry newsletter April 2025.  This is a view of mining engineer. Dugald Gray

Let’s assume that the level of community acceptance, reflected in legislation, along with innovation in technology and systems, will continue to remain key influences into the future. But note there are limits. For example, at present the limiting distance to sensitive receptors for production blasting is about 250m, provided certain blast designs, technologies (and flyrock control measures) are rigorously applied, and blasting experts say there’s little scope to go closer.

But let’s leave that for Quarry’s 60th birthday analysts. By then Mt Coot-tha Quarry will likely be a lake and botanic garden, its hornfels aggregate a distant memory, and a new cycle of quarrying will have begun.

There is no doubt there is further scope for adoption of noise and dust suppression technologies, particularly as the costs of such technologies reduce. And innovations in transport, automation and materials technologies can be expected.

Dugald Gray is a mining engineer, principal of quarrying industry consultant Ecoroc Pty Ltd and an IQA past president

Now is the time for teh community to help design the chages to the Quarry.  Here is my suggestion

 mt coot tha1

The view from the lookout in the Botanic gardens is great.   We had a breakfast at the lookout with Lions mid week.   Th view just above the quarry would be equally as good. The location and view is similar to the Aborteum in Canberra.  It has an a la carte restaurant for conferences but no accommodation.  We had a luncheon there with the surveyors in Canberra. I marked up the car park and the restaurant areas.  Parking is a real problem at Mt Coot-tha.  This solves the parking problem The quarry then becomes part of the Botanic gardens with a walkway around the walls of the quarry.  So that keeps the Greens happy. The water fall is part of the pumped water system around the quarry so that the water at the base of the quarry can be pumped to a central water tower at the Lookout.  This water tower can be used to move water from the quarry to the bottom lakes an vie versa.  The waterfall oxygenates the water.  High rainfall causes problems in the water quality as mud contaminates the rain water. I  think the water system includes Slaughter falls.A good case for using solar to pump water around the botanic gardens.

We wll get an obituary soon.  Some of my recollecions from the funeral.  Robyn suggested I just make some up.

I have only known Tom for the last four yewrs so the detail maybe sketchy and inaccurate. Tom was born and lived his youth in North Queensland.  He was brought up as a Catholic and the funerl was a full Catholic service. He first lived in Mackay and then bordered in  Townsvile. He wasa top sportsman and could have had a career in Golf or maybe cricket.  In the 1960's sport was a recreation and not a commercial actvitiy as it is today. Tom loved learning and was a top academic as well.  He had a mulitude of choices for a caraeer and chose pharmacy.  An absolute workaholic. He married early and had 4 dauhers and one son.  They all took part in the funeral.  The children produced a collecton of grand daughters and Tom seemed to dot on all the grand daughters. So many photos of Tom cuddling a baby. At around 50 Tom workaholic attitudes lead to a divorce that was not mentioned at the funersal.  He then took up house with Robyn and setup the Artists Gallery in Paddington so that Robyn could just stay at home and paint.  He had 27 glorius years with Robyn. I visited the gallery in 2017 (witth NDHS) and fell inlove with the house and gallery.  Quite jealous in some ways.  The house is on 3 levels and the gardne has three or four levels below the bottom floor.  The garden was like a pharmacy shop with a tremend\ous collecion of plants located specially around the house.in a fashion similar to a chemist shop.  Tom took on leadership roles at The Gap Garden Club, Probus  and QCGC.  He will be sadly missed.

Save Joncia Gardens Protest

Main Menu

Joncia Gardens is an award-winning garden in the suburb of Logan Reserve that has recently received notice of resumption for a high school. This will mean the loss of another wonderful garden visited by many garden and community groups. ABC Radio and A Current Affair produced segments for their programs.

If you are concerned about this decision, you could contact not only your local Member of Parliament but others for example -

Contacting your own local member could also be of benefit. On our website there are links to all Queensland politicians.

It is hoped that if enough of us express concern over the resumption, it may be reversed.

It is certainly wonderful to see the support coming from ABC Radio and A Current Affair.
