The Queensland Council of Garden Clubs has reintroduced an initiative to assist and support those many garden clubs who are located outside of the CBD of Brisbane. This year the focus was on the Sunshine Coast where many garden clubs and plant societies are located. The Buderim Garden Club was approached to host this regional Friendship Day and by all accounts, was a most successful event. This initiative will be implemented in other geographic locations where resources are made available.

Buderim Garden Club members provided many plants for the plant stall with many people going home with at least one purchase. The photo competition showed that there are some wonderful photographers in the club.

The guest speaker for this event was Jillian Coomb, horticulturalist from Searles Garden Products at Kilcoy. Her presentation was very lively and most informative. Everyone participated asking multiple questions of Jill. A range of Searles garden products were on display for all to see and touch and then added to the raffle.

Councillor Ted Hungerford made a late appearance and conducted the raffle draw which took some time as there were many prizes donated from clubs.

QCGC committee members and 71 members from 9 clubs attended with all bringing a plate of food to share for lunch. What a scrumptious meal that was enjoyed by all while chatting with members of other clubs. What a great way to build relationships with other groups!

In summary, this Regional Friendship Day was a great success with more planned for the future.

Some background on the Buderim Garden Club. Currently the Club has 203 financial members and 11 life members. Monthly meetings attract 100 plus persons who participate in all the activities provided. There is always a lucky door prize, raffles, plant competition and plant sales. The raffle prize was drawn by Ted Hungerford, Div 7, Councillor, from the local Sunshine Coast Council.  Manawee Nursery provides the raffle prize for each monthly meeting as a supporter of the club.

A very different activity is a monthly digital photography competition where a theme is provided such as “colours of autumn”. Each photo is shown using a digital projector as a slide show. These digital photos are made into cards that are offered for sale and sold to members and assists in club funds.
